The Impact of Puck Possession and Location on Ice Hockey Strategy
نویسنده
چکیده
I create a state space within the game of ice hockey by noting which team has possession, and in what location of the rink the puck is located. This space is used to model the game as a semiMarkov process, as data from a series of games in 2004-2005 NCAA play suggest that the system cannot be modeled as a continuous time Markov process. The model is then used to determine the average number of goals scored by a team as a function of the starting state. These scoring probabilities are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of several commonly used tactics. ∗The author thanks George Lindsey, Gopi Goswami, Jim Greiner, Erol Pekoz and Carl Morris for their helpful suggestions, as well as his anonymous reviewers.

Inter-arrival Times of Goals in Ice Hockey
Previous studies have attempted to model goal scoring in sports such as ice hockey as simple Poisson processes. Others (Thomas, 2006) have shown that events within the game of ice hockey are better modelled as a Semi-Markov process determined by puck possession and location. I demonstrate that a similarly defined Semi-Markov process model is well-suited to describe the times between goals score...
متن کاملExperimental Characterization of Ice Hockey Sticks and Pucks
The following describes experimental methods for characterizing ice hockey pucks and sticks at game-like speeds. Pucks were characterized according to their coefficient of restitution (COR) and dynamic stiffness (DS) for different brands, speeds, and temperatures. The COR provided a measure of the puck’s elasticity, while the DS provided a measure of puck hardness. At room temperature, puck COR...

The purpose of this study was to examine the "recoil" effect of the ice hockey stick shaft during a stationary slap shot. Nine male adult subjects (four elite and five recreational) were tested. Their performances were evaluated by simultaneously recording stick movement and internal bending from high-speed digital video (1,000 Hz) and puck acceleration from a triaxial accelerometer positioned ...

متن کاملGet your kICS by measuring membrane protein dynamics.
Akin to the puck on an ice hockey rink, the lateral dynamics of a representative membrane protein exhibits rich behavior (1). Depending on the interaction with the hockey players and other obstacles (membrane constituents), the puck (protein) can dart around the ice (membrane surface) or be stalled momentarily (transient confinement zone). If we watched the motion of a single puck, we would nee...
